KU to honor high school students from Shawnee Mission district

LAWRENCE -- Students from five Kansas high schools will be honored Wednesday, Oct. 24, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association.

The students, seniors from Johnson County, will be named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 7 p.m. program and reception at the Jewish Community Campus of Greater Kansas City, 5801 W. 115th St., Overland Park.

Honorees' names are listed below.

Donald Hagen, executive vice chancellor of the KU Medical Center, will speak. Alumni Association representatives Carolyn Barnes, director of the Kansas Honors Program, and Kelly Kidwell, assistant director of chapter and constituent programs, is in charge of award presentations.

Joyce Thompson, Shawnee, is the site coordinator. High school chairs are: Carly Adams, Lawrence, for Shawnee Mission East High School; Joe Kurtzman, Overland Park, for Shawnee Mission Northwest High School; Joseph M. Nielsen, Shawnee, for Shawnee Mission North High School; Melissa Boos Nielsen, Shawnee, for Shawnee Mission West High School; and Mary Hibbert Patch, Overland Park, for Shawnee Mission South High School.

The KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971. The program has honored 79,500 students in the top 10 percent of the Kansas high school senior classes.
