Faculty flute recital offers fresh interpretations

LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas professor of flute John Boulton presents a brand-new look at important 50-year-old compositions during a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in Swarthout Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Everyone can enjoy Boulton's performance of "Kind of Blue"; he plays Miles Davis' trumpet solos on the flute. Colleagues Vince Gnojek, Kip Haaheim, John Parks and Keith Wright sit in with saxophone, electric bass, percussion and additional flute accompaniment.

Latin rhythms new to the flute in 1947 are presented in M. Camargo Guarnieri's "Sonatina." A resurgence of interest in this music makes this piece more contemporary than ever. Boulton also performs the complicated -- and rarely heard -- "Sonatine," by Pierre Boulez. This composition fully expresses the joy of life so valued in French flute music.

Boulton has been at KU since 1963, active in both faculty and Midwestern Music Camp activities since then. He earned his bachelor and master of music degrees at Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in music education at the University of Kansas. He has performed with the Kansas City Philharmonic, the Kansas City Ballet, the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra and the Kansas City Early Music and Spencer Consorts. He is a member of the Kansas Woodwinds and the Topeka Symphony Orchestra.
