KU Sings! features six university voice ensembles

LAWRENCE -- In an evening that promises a wide range of musical styles and material, six University of Kansas choral groups combine for KU Sings! at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in the Lied Center. Admission is free.

Collegium Musicum, conducted by Gary Weidenaar, begins the concert with "Gaudete," followed by the Men's Glee Club singing "Ave Maria" by Franz Biebl, under the direction of Hugo Vera. James Daugherty leads the Concert Choir in "Hallelujah!" by Rhonda Sandberg, who employs mixed meter and points of imitation to give each syllable emphasis. "Gloria in Excelsis Deo," the famous piece by Franz Schubert, concludes the Concert Choir set.

Next the Women's Chorale performs two pieces, "The Maid on the Shore" by Stella Goud and "Heart We Will Forget Him" by James Mulholland. Ed Goeke directs. After Collegium Musicum returns to sing "Monteverdi madrigal," the University Singers, conducted by Chris Gilliam, make their appearance, singing "All This Night" by Rene Clausen.

The Men's Glee Club returns to perform "Luck Be a Lady" from the musical "Guys and Dolls" by Frank Loesser, followed by a selection by the Random Harmony Barbershop Quartet. The Chamber Choir, conducted by Weidenaar, sings "Jesu Corona" and the classic "Down by the Riverside" to conclude the event.
