LAWRENCE -- Ten University of Kansas freshmen received top honors as Chancellors Club Scholars for 2001-2002 tonight at the 24th annual meeting of the Chancellors Club at the Lawrence Holiday Inn Holidome.
The Chancellors Club, the major-donor organization at the Kansas University Endowment Association, finances the renewable scholarships, which recognize National Merit finalists, National Achievement Scholars and National Hispanic Scholars who have outstanding high school records. Five students from Kansas high schools and five from out of state have been added to the roster of Chancellors Club Scholars.
Kansas recipients for 2001-2002 are Tracy Cunningham, Overland Park; Alan Dibos, Lenexa; Marci Deuth, Salina; Tristan Moody, Lawrence; and Shannon Sanderson, Olathe.
Out-of-state recipients are Ryan Faulconer, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Elizabeth Franklin, Cedar Falls, Iowa; Brian Morrow, Edmond, Okla.; Justin Mosel, Orchard, Neb.; and Caroline Wright, Kansas City, Mo.
From Lawrence: Tristan Moody, son of Bob and Patsy Moody, majors in aerospace engineering. He chose to attend KU because it was in his hometown and offered excellent scholarship support.
He graduated from Lawrence Free State High School, where he was active in marching band, symphonic band, symphony orchestra, chamber choir and chamber singers. He is a National Merit finalist. From KU, he received the Roland T. Beard Scholarship, a Coca-Cola Scholarship and the N.T. Veatch Scholarship.
From Lenexa: Alan M. Dibos, son of Heidi Dibos, majors in physics and math. He cited the quality of the physics faculty as a reason he chose to attend KU.
He graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School, where he was active in intramural volleyball, basketball and ultimate Frisbee, as well as Science Knowledge Bowl and Science Olympiad teams. He was an advanced placement scholar with distinction, a Harvard Prize Book winner, Gilliland Award winner for best student in the physical sciences at Shawnee Mission South, recipient of the Kansas State Top Male in Mathematics and Science at Shawnee Mission South and a member of the KC Metro Grand Champion Science Knowledge Bowl Team. He also was president of the National Honor Society and a student adviser to Shawnee Mission School District Superintendent Marjorie Kaplan.
Dibos is a National Merit finalist. From KU, he received the Clyde A. Babb Scholarship and the Ellis D. Bever Scholarship.
From Olathe: Shannon A. Sanderson, daughter of Steven H. and Jennifer B. Sanderson, majors in computer science and is interested in genetics and Spanish. She was familiar with KU's campus, the School of Engineering and several professors because she had attended the summer women's engineering camp for three years. She also appreciated KU's quality of education and the scholarship package offered.
She was class valedictorian at Olathe South High School, where she participated in debate, forensics, Scholar's Bowl, Science Olympiad, math club, calculus club, swim team and a U.S. swim team. She was MVP of the school swim team during two seasons, a member of the National Honor Society, an advanced placement scholar with honor and a Kansas Honors Scholar.
She received a citizenship award, the All-American Scholar's Award for two years, the USAA National Leadership and Service Award, the Smith College Book Award and the Dean's List Award for two years through Johnson County Community College's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. She is a National Merit finalist. From KU, she received the Clyde A. Babb Scholarship, the Roland T. Beard Scholarship and the N.T. Veatch Scholarship.
From Overland Park: Tracy Lyn Cunningham, daughter of Ricky and Lyn Cunningham, majors in psychology and creative writing. She was attracted to KU's diverse student population and educational opportunities.
She graduated from Olathe East High School, where she was involved in the Kansas Association for Youth, yearbook, basketball, track and field, and the International Thespian Society. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was a Kansas Honors Scholar, a Governor's Scholar and a district scholar. She received awards for excellence in math, Spanish, English and choir.
She is a National Achievement Scholar, and she received the Society of American Military Engineers Scholarship. From KU, she received the Clyde A. Babb Scholarship, the Greater University Fund Scholarship and the Charles S. Scott Sr. Leadership Scholarship.
From Salina: Marci K. Deuth, daughter of Tom and Judy Deuth, majors in chemical engineering with a biomedical emphasis and plans to study medicine. She has appreciated Lawrence and KU since she attended a Roy Williams basketball clinic as a fifth-grader. Visiting her older sister, now a KU graduate, reinforced her desire to attend the university.
She graduated from Salina South High School, where she was active in student council, band, cross country, plays and musicals, Scholars' Bowl, math relays, humanities team and forensics. She was a Topeka Capitol-Journal All-State Student, a Kansas Regents Honors Academy graduate, a Salina Chamber of Commerce Junior Leadership Program graduate and a Kansas State High School Activities Association Student Council Camp junior counselor. She is a National Merit finalist. She received the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, the National Association of Secondary School Principals' Scholarship and a National Honor Society Scholarship. From KU, she received the Clyde A. Babb Scholarship, the Roland T. Beard Scholarship, the James S. and Catharine C. Combs Scholarship, the J.L. Constant Scholarship and the Dane G. Hansen Scholarship.
From Colorado Springs, Colo.: Ryan Scott Faulconer, son of Dr. Forrest H. and Maria Fasal Faulconer, majors in political science and is interested in Spanish, economics, and crime and deliquency studies. He chose to attend KU for several reasons, including the fact that his father is a KU alumnus. He appreciated the scholarship support, the opportunities in academics and extracurricular activities and his experience with the KU Office of Admissions and Scholarships.
Faulconer graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School, where he participated in golf and various band and orchestra competitions, the math league, the school newspaper and the Building Advisory and Accountability Committee. During his senior year, he was selected as the Spanish department top student and the math department top student. He received the advanced placement physics top student award, and he was a member of the National Honor Society as well as honor bands at the state level.
His volunteer activities included traveling to Mexico with Amor Ministries, serving meals at the local Odd Fellows Hall, helping with a Veterans' Day parade and working at the Humane Society's Furr Ball. He also operated his own lawn-mowing business.
He is a National Merit finalist. He received the Broadmoor Rotary Club Scholarship and the Jessie Kaplan Mintz Scholarship. From KU, he received the Roland T. Beard Scholarship.
From Cedar Falls, Iowa: Elizabeth A. Franklin, daughter of Mark A. and Cynthia J. Franklin, majors in Spanish. She chose to attend KU because of its outstanding journalism and Spanish programs, the political and social atmosphere, and the helpfulness of KU staff members. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School, where she was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, host and producer of a live half-hour television show, and co-host and co-creator of a television news magazine. She was a student representative for the Cedar Falls School District Multi-cultural Gender-fair Committee and youth/teen representative for the City of Cedar Falls' 2010 Strategic Planning Team. She also served on the Retreat Team of St. Patrick's Church.
She received the Endeavor Recognition Award, the Helen McDowell Award for Outstanding Achievement in English and the Golden Wrench Award. She was chosen as the school newspaper's Most Valuable Staff Member and the regional winner of the National Committee for the Teachers of English Writing Competition. She is a National Merit finalist, and she received the Nelson F. Peterson Memorial Scholarship. From KU, she received the Clyde A. Babb Scholarship, the Roland T. Beard Scholarship and the Ruth E. Hunt Scholarship.
From Kansas City, Mo.: Caroline Wright, daughter of Curt and Jackie Bartlett, majors in accounting. She chose to attend KU because of the scholarship support offered, the high academic standards, recommendations from alumni, the attractive campus and the kind, personable faculty members. She was class valedictorian at Park Hill High School, where she was varsity tennis team captain, secretary for the Future Business Leaders of America, a member of Key Club, a Senior Executive Council representative and a member of the National Honor Society. She also volunteered at the Kansas City Community Kitchen.
She is a National Hispanic Achievement finalist. She was a Ventures Scholar and one of the Missouri Scholars 100. She received the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, the League of United Latin American Citizens Education Scholarship and the Shirley Chapple Scholarship. From KU, she received the William and Winifred Hoffman Scholarship.
From Orchard, Neb.: Justin Allen Mosel, son of Sandy Mosel, has not yet declared a major but is interested in history, math and music. He chose to attend KU because of the generous scholarship support and the attractive campus.
He graduated from Orchard High School, where he participated in basketball, golf and band. He received the Discovery Card Tribute Gold Award and won third place in the 1997 National Geography Bee. A National Merit finalist, he received from KU the Otto and Edna Frederikson Scholarship, the Greater University Fund Scholarship and the Riss Scholarship. From Edmond, Okla.: Brian Morrow, son of Dick and Debi Morrow, majors in engineering and has not yet decided which program to pursue. He chose to attend KU because his parents and other family members are alumni and he appreciated the scholarship support and KU's Honors Program.
He was class valedictorian at Santa Fe High School, where he participated in band and orchestra. He also was co-captain of the academic (Quiz Bowl) team, which won two state championships. He was named to the All-State Band, the All-State Orchestra and Academic All-State, and he was a Renaissance Scholar. He placed first in the State Fair of Oklahoma Academic Scholars Contest.
He is a National Merit finalist. He received the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship, an Oklahoma Academic All-State Scholarship, the Society of Petroleum Engineers-Oklahoma City Section Scholarship and an Oklahoma State Regents Academic Scholarship. From KU, he received the Clyde A. Babb Scholarship and the Greater University Fund Scholarship.

Founded in 1891, KU Endowment is the first foundation of its kind at a U.S. public university and one of the largest.
