Engineering high school design competition set for Nov. 6

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas School of Engineering is inviting hundreds of high school students to come to Lawrence for its annual High School Design Competition Nov. 6.

The event is open to high school students across the state and the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The competition features a twist this year -- two competitive events. Students may take part in the "Glass Scaler" competition, which has participants create and bring a device that can scale a vertical pane of glass, as well as the impromptu design competition. The objective and rules of the impromptu competition will be announced the day of the event. Students must work in teams with materials supplied by the School of Engineering. Awards will be presented to top finishers in each event.

As part of the event, high school students will have an opportunity to learn about career opportunities in engineering. Tours of Learned Hall, home of the School of Engineering, and engineering labs will also be available for interested students.

Students from all high schools and their teachers and sponsors are welcome.

For more information, go to the design competition Web site. The site features complete rules for the "Glass Scaler" competition, as well as information about registration and a schedule of events. Potential participants also may contact Ginny Pearson at (785) 864-2931.
