KU to honor high school students at Emporia

LAWRENCE -- Students from 11 Kansas high schools will be honored Thursday, Nov. 1, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association.

The students, seniors from Chase, Coffey, Lyon and Morris counties, will be named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 6:30 p.m. dinner program at the Emporia State University student union, 12th and Commercial, Emporia.

Honorees' names are listed below.

Mary Zimmerman, professor of medicine, health policy and management at the KU Medical Center, will speak. Fred Williams, president of the Kansas Alumni Association, is in charge of award presentations.

The program will cost parents and alumni $10 each. Honored students will be guests of the Alumni Association and the Endowment Association.

Gary Ace, Emporia, is the site coordinator. County coordinators are Brian Filinger, Council Grove, for Chase County; Polly Epting and Ken Vaughn, both of Burlington, for Coffey County; and Jody Sellers, Council Grove, for Morris County.

The KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971. The program has honored 79,500 students in the top 10 percent of the Kansas high school senior classes.
