KU revives historic Jayhawk to benefit scholarships for terrorist victims' families

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas is calling back to duty its spirited Jayhawk mascot of 1941-46 to raise funds for families of victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Going on sale today is a T-shirt with the historic Jayhawk along with the U.S. flag and the phrase "United We Stand." Proceeds from sales of the $10 T-shirt will go to the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund for children and spouses of victims of the terrorist attacks.

"We wanted to contribute to the relief effort for victims' families," said Chancellor Robert Hemenway. "This mascot served KU well during previous difficult times. We hope its revival will aid a good cause."

Created in 1941 by the late Dr. Gene "Yogi" Williams of El Dorado, a KU graduate, the mascot has a determined stance and contentious expression. Some dubbed it the "Fighting Jayhawk." After World War II drew to a close, KU student Hal Sandy responded to demands for a happier mascot by creating his famous smiling Jayhawk, which remains in use today.

Former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole, who attended KU in 1941, and former President Bill Clinton are co-chairs of the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund. Founded by the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America and the Lumina Foundation for Education, the fund will support scholarships for children and spouses of firefighters and police officers, flight crews and passengers, World Trade Center and Pentagon workers who were victims of the attack.

Organizers of the scholarship fund hope to raise at least $100 million nationally for victims' family members to use at public or private colleges and universities and trade and vocational schools.

The historic Jayhawk T-shirt is available at the KU Bookstores in the Kansas and Burge Unions and its website www.jayhawks.com; the KU Bookstore on the Edwards Campus in Overland Park; the KU Medical Center Bookstore in Kansas City, Kan. and its website www.kumedbooks.com, and the KU Athletic Corporation's website www.kustore.com. The shirt also will be for sale at kustore.com locations at Memorial Stadium during football games and at Allen Fieldhouse during basketball games.

The T-shirt was printed by Prairie Graphics of Lawrence. The design is by the KU Office of University Relations, in cooperation with the KU Office of Trademark Licensing.
