KU's Audio-Reader to celebrate 30th anniversary with picnic, proclamation

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Audio-Reader Network will celebrate its 30th anniversary Oct. 11.

In honor of this important milestone, the City of Lawrence and the State of Kansas have proclaimed Oct. 7 through 13 "University of Kansas Audio-Reader Network Week." Audio-Reader will hold a special picnic from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, for all current and former Audio-Reader volunteers and staff and their families.

The picnic will take place on the Audio-Reader grounds, 1120 W. 11th St., and will feature food, live music and special birthday wishes from Audio-Reader listeners. Audio-Reader also will recognize Eleanor Symons, its very first volunteer, who has completed 30 years of volunteer service.

Founded by Lawrence philanthropist Petey Cerf, Audio-Reader is a radio reading service for the blind and print-disabled and is offered as a public service by the University of Kansas. Audio-Reader provides live and recorded broadcasts of current books, magazines, newspapers and other printed materials.

The Audio-Reader Network also offers a telephone reader dial-up newspaper information system, audio descriptions of area theater performances, special request cassette recording and a sensory garden. For information about the picnic or Audio-Reader's services, call (785) 864-4600 or (800) 772-8898.
