Coping with grief includes recognizing cycles of sadness and normalcy

LAWRENCE -- In the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, the Counseling and Psychological Services staff at the University of Kansas prepared tips for coping with grief for students, faculty and staff.

Members of KU's professional counseling staff are available to students, faculty and staff in their offices on the second level of Watkins Health Center.

To schedule an appointment students, faculty or staff may call 864-2277.

TIPS FOR COPING WITH GRIEF

1. Spend time with friends so you and they don't have to struggle alone.

2. Look for consolation from those you trust, rather than searching for someone to blame.

3. Understand that periods of grief may arise very suddenly and retreat just as quickly. These cycles of sadness and normalcy may last several months.

4. Offer tangible help to friends experiencing feelings of grief and loss. Have lunch together, run an errand for them, comfort them by just listening.
