Hispanic literatures conference to focus on Latin American works, scholarship

LAWRENCE - Scholars whose work focuses on the literature of Latin America will convene in Lawrence Oct. 4 to 6 for the annual Mid-America Conference on Hispanic Literatures, to be held at the Holiday Inn Holidome in Lawrence.

The conference is a joint undertaking of the universities of Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin and Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. It provides a forum for the presentation of research on all periods and genres of Spanish, Spanish-American, Portuguese, and Luso-Brazilian literatures. Papers are presented in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

The conference will begin Thursday, Oct. 4, with a workshop at the Kansas Union on "The Pedagogy of Literature," featuring keynote speakers Brad Epps of Harvard University, William Rowe of the University of London, and Harriet Turner of the University of Nebraska.

Besides roundtable discussions and paper presentations, the conference will include a performance of "Baby Boom in Paradise," written by Costa Rican dramatist Ana Istaru and performed by Kirsten Nigro of the University of Cincinnati.

The conference is sponsored by the University of Kansas Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Office of the Provost, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Center for Latin American Studies, Graduate School, Hall Center for the Humanities, and Continuing Education.
