KU Medical Center physician receives Kemper Award, $5,000 prize

LAWRENCE --The "Surprise Patrol" on Wednesday gave another Kemper Award for excellence in teaching and advising to a University of Kansas faculty member. The patrol has presented 19 of the 20 individual $5,000 Kemper Awards. The 20th award will soon be given to an unsuspecting winner at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

The W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence recognize outstanding teachers and advisers at KU as determined by a seven-member selection committee. The committee's members include students, faculty and KU alumni. This is the sixth year in the 10-year award program. The William T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank, Trustee, established a $500,000 fund for the program. The KU Endowment Association has provided $500,000 in matching funds.

Today's winner is: Daniel L. Swagerty, Jr.

Daniel Swagerty, Jr., is a physician in family medicine and internal medicine and associate director for medical education in KUÿs Center on Aging. He has developed a curriculum and does didactic teaching for third-year students on their geriatric rotation, but the bulk of his teaching is done with students and residents in the nursing home setting. The curriculum he developed at KU is currently being used by several other medical schools. He has a grant to develop a center in Kansas for Excellence in Geriatrics.
