KU plans festive celebration to welcome Jayhawks home at 4 p.m. Tuesday

LAWRENCE -- Kansas Jayhawks fans are invited to welcome Coach Roy Williams and the basketball team home from the Final Four at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Stadium.

The festive hourlong event will celebrate the phenomenal season, which includes the first undefeated conference record in the Big 12. The event is open to the public, and gates to the stadium will open at 2:30 p.m.

Longtime Jayhawk radio announcers Max Falkenstien and Bob Davis will emcee the event. Speakers will include Chancellor Robert Hemenway, Athletics Director Al Bohl, Williams and several team members.

A presentation of colors by the KU Reserve Officers' Training Corps and the singing of the national anthem by the high-energy country group Dixie Road will kick off the program. At 4:18 p.m., spectators will view a "low and slow" flyover by a B-1 bomber flown by a four-man crew of KU graduates from the 184th Bomb Wing at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita.

The KU pep band, Big Jay and Baby Jay mascots, cheerleaders, Crimson Girls, the SuperJay inflatable Jayhawk and a Jayhawk-emblazoned hot air balloon will add to the celebration. The singing of the alma mater will conclude the program.

Stadium concessions and the KUStore.com store will be open on the west side. Stadium parking lots 50, 55 and 59 on the west side of the stadium and 92, 93 and 94 on the east side will be open to visitors. The parking garage north of the Kansas Union also will be open.

In the event of inclement weather, the celebration will be moved to Allen Fieldhouse. A decision will be made by 1:30 p.m.

Classes will be in session. Any early dismissal for students to attend this event will be at the instructorØs discretion.
