'Genius Award' winner, KU alum to speak Thursday about DNA

LAWRENCE -- A molecular biologist and University of Kansas graduate who earned a prestigious MacArthur fellowship will speak on campus Thursday.

David H. Hillis, who in 1999 won the $295,000 award sometimes dubbed the "Genius Award," will speak on "DNA and the History of Life" at 3:30 p.m. in 1005 Haworth Hall. The lecture, one of several events surrounding this week's KU Biological Sciences Alumni Advisory Board meeting, is open to the public.

Hillis earned a master's degree in biology in 1983, a master's degree in public health in 1984 and a doctorate in biology in 1985 at KU. A professor at the University of Texas in Austin, Hillis has developed new molecular genetic analyses that contribute to the understanding of the history of life on earth. He has shown that the relationships among species can be inferred from small differences in their DNA sequences, revealing both the order and timing of evolutionary processes.

Before Hillis' lecture, an undergraduate/graduate research symposium will start the events at 2 p.m. with poster presentations in the foyer outside 1005 Haworth Hall. The presentations will resume at 4 p.m., after the lecture.
