25 years of former student leaders to return to KU April 19 and 20

LAWRENCE -- Former student body presidents and vice presidents will return to the University of Kansas campus this month for a two-day conference with current KU student leaders.

The "Celebrating 25 Years of Student Leadership" conference will welcome back student leaders who have worked with retiring Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs David A. Ambler. The focus of the conference is to connect past and present student leaders. The former presidents and vice presidents will speak, be presenters, and participate in panels and roundtable discussions. About 200 students are expected to attend.

The event takes place from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, and 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20, in the Kansas Union.

A list of returning student leaders and the years they served appears below.

"The most exciting part of this is seeing former students interact with current students," said Rueben Perez, coordinator of leadership programs. "History is our best teacher."

The opening keynote speaker for the conference is David Dillon, chief operating officer of The Kroger Co. and student body president in 1972-73. The closing keynote speaker is Kansas state Sen. David Adkins, student body president in 1982-83, who is running for Kansas attorney general.

These former student leaders are involved in a wide array of careers and leadership roles in corporations, nonprofit organizations, community activism, law and education. Students will meet with many alumni and learn how student involvement enhanced their career path.

"These individuals, many of whom have gone on to stellar careers, continually tell me that the experiences they had as a student leader at KU have been extremely valuable to them in their careers," Ambler said.

Students can obtain registration forms in the Organizations and Leadership Office; the registration deadline is April 12. A $15 fee covers dinner on Friday and lunch on Saturday.
