3 KU students win math competition

LAWRENCE -- Three winners in the 20th annual University of Kansas Mathematics Prize Competition recently were announced by the KU mathematics department.

In the senior level, open to all undergraduates, Pedro Lei, sophomore in mathematics from the Chinese territory of Macau, won the $150 first prize.

In the junior level, open to all undergraduates except seniors, Jeff Bergfalk, Mission sophomore in mathematics, won first place. He received a $100 prize. Michael Bateman, Lawrence junior in mathematics, philosophy and history, won the second-place prize of $50.

Two contestants entered the senior-level competition, and nine contestants entered the junior-level competition, according to Hongguo Xu, assistant professor of mathematics and competition coordinator. The competition attracts students in math, science and engineering.

The written examination for each competition consists of six questions that must be completed in three hours.

The junior-level competition requires knowledge of first-year calculus. The senior-level competition may cover all undergraduate math courses.

DOUGLAS COUNTY
From Lawrence
Michael Bateman, junior in mathematics, philosophy and history, son of James Bateman, 926 W. 29th St.; second place in the junior-level competition.

JOHNSON COUNTY From Mission
Jeff Bergfalk, sophomore in mathematics, son of Jan Hodgson, 6248 Ash; first place in the junior-level competition.
