International exchange program co-founder to return to KU

LAWRENCE -- A one-time University of Kansas scholar who co-founded AISEC, the world's largest nonprofit student-run international exchange program, will return to campus this month to speak to students and give a public lecture.

French executive Jean Choplin will be an international executive in residence at KU April 15 to 20. He also will give the second address in a lecture series supported by the Oswald Lectureship Fund. Choplin will speak on "Developing the Overlooked Asset: The Value of Country-Specific Knowledge" at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the Spencer Museum of Art auditorium.

In addition to speaking to KU classes in business and political science, Choplin will meet with national and regional AISEC officers. Choplin was one of the founders of AISEC, which originated in European universities at the end of World War II. AISEC gives young people the opportunity to gain a global perspective through a foreign management training experience. KU has an active AISEC chapter on campus.

An ardent promoter of international exchange, cross-cultural understanding and international business, Choplin played a leading role in the resurgence of French business after World War II. After receiving a master's degree in business administration from the Ecole Superieure de Commerce de Paris in 1951, Choplin came to KU in 1952 as a Fulbright scholar.

Upon his return to France, he worked with the Boussac Group, owner of the House of Dior, and for the next 25 years held executive positions in the textile, garment and construction industries. He was associated with the ETAM retail chain, was general manager of the Prouvost Group and was development manager for the Dumez Group, a prominent construction contractor with projects around the world.

Choplin also is slated to speak on "Differences in Doing Business within the European Union" at the Kansas International breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Friday, April 19, at the Alvamar Country Club, 1800 Crossgate Drive in Lawrence. Reservations are required; please call the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce at (785) 841-4685.
