Leawood senior is first Asian-American elected KU student body president

LAWRENCE -- Leawood senior Jonathan Ng has become the first Asian-American to be elected student body president at the University of Kansas.

Ng -- along with his vice presidential running mate, Loren Malone, Senatobia, Miss., junior -- defeated two other pairs of candidates in student elections on April 10 and 11. He will serve as president for the 2002-2003 academic year.

Ng is the second Asian-American to serve as student body president and the first elected directly to the position. The first Asian-American student body president was Alan Lowden, formerly of Sedan. Lowden was elected vice president in 1991 and assumed the presidency when the Student Senate removed the elected president from office.

Ng is majoring in Spanish and strategic communications. Malone is a psychology major. They represent the student coalition KUnited.

Ng and Malone were opposed by Delta Force coalition presidential candidate Karen Keith, Tulsa, Okla., senior, and her running mate, Kit Brauer, Denver sophomore, and SMILE Coalition presidential candidate Paul Bammel, Wichita junior, and his running mate, Jared Hiatt, Solomon sophomore. Ng and Malone finished with 2,297 votes. Keith and Brauer finished with 1,493 votes, and Bammel and Hiatt finished with 170 votes.

KU Student Senate elections occur annually to elect the student body president, vice president and other Student Senate positions by student vote.
