LAWRENCE -- A unique student design-build class at the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Design is highlighted in the current edition of the Journal of Architectural Education, the premier academic journal in architecture.
The magazine features Professor Dan RockhillØs "Studio 804" graduate design class, which gives third-year graduate students an opportunity to design and build an affordable, ADA-compliant home each spring semester.
The students perform tasks from acquiring required permitting to swinging a hammer. One or two students will manage particular jobs, such as assembling the frame and pouring concrete. The houses, typically built for $40 to $50 a square foot, then are sold to a low- to moderate-income family.
The four homes built in Lawrence so far have won multiple design awards, including selection as a finalist representing the U.S. in the World Architecture Awards in 2001.
The journal describes the program as challenging and creative and says it fosters "a constructive and material ingenuity that has distinguished the resulting work."
