WHAT, WHEN & WHERE: About 400 alumni and students of the School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas are expected to attend the 52nd annual Social Work Day events Friday, April 19, in the Kansas Union.
WHO: Oriah Mountain Dreamer, best-selling author of "The Invitation" and "The Dance," is a keynote speaker. At 9:15 a.m. in Woodruff Auditorium, she will present "What We Ache for: Exploring Our True Motivations and Our Deep Capacity to Help Each Other and the World." The afternoon keynote speaker is SuEllen Fried, who wrote "Bullies & Victims: Helping Your Child Through the Schoolyard Battlefield" with her daughter, Paula, in 1996. Fried will speak on "Bullies & Victims: Children Abusing Children" at 1 p.m. in Woodruff Auditorium.
AWARDS: During lunch in the ballroom, the Social Work Alumni Society executive board and the school will present awards recognizing outstanding achievement.
The Social Work Alumni Society faculty award will go to Scott Harding, assistant professor, in recognition of his teaching ability in social welfare policy.æJan Jess, assistant director of practicum, will receive the alumni of the year award.
Each year the KU School of Social Welfare honors two social workers who serve as teachers on a volunteer basis to provide field instruction for students in social work practicums around the state and in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
