MEDIA ADVISORY: Inaugural international photo exhibit opens today at KU anthropology museum

WHAT: An inaugural international "Picture the World" photography contest exhibit, reception and announcement of the contest winners as part of International Awareness Week at the University of Kansas.

WHEN: 4 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in the KU Museum of Anthropology, Spooner Hall, north gallery. The reception follows an international fashion show in the Kansas Union lobby during the weekly 3-4 p.m. Thursday tea.

WHO: The KU chapter of Phi Beta Delta honor society for international scholars is sponsoring the exhibit of winning photos from the new photo contest. Winners for each category and class and the best of show will be announced at the opening. Forty-one students, faculty and staff, and alumni submitted 84 color and black-and-white 8-by-10 prints to be judged in three categories: people, places or cultural traces. Contestants could submit three photos for each category. The entry that came the farthest was from an alumna living in Japan. Places depicted in the photos include the Forbidden City in the People's Republic of China, a cathedral in Mexico, cattlemen at a market in Madagascar, a bullfight in Spain and a woman making bobbin lace in Bulgaria.

AWARD SPONSORS: Local businesses that contributed to the prizes are The Image Works, gift certificates for each "Best of Class" plus a camera for "Best of Show"; Council Travel, "Best of Show"; KU Alumni Association, for "Alumni Best of Class"; ING for "Faculty/Staff Best of Class"; and the Kansas Union Bookstore and the Jayhawk Bookstore for "Student Best of Class."

AWARD JURORS: Peter Thompson, professor of art, and Luke Jordan, lecturer in design.
