LAWRENCE -- Both University of Kansas student and community actors are needed for the Kansas Summer Theatre production of "Prairie Fire, Parts I and II," a group of plays based on reminiscences and oral histories about early Kansas history. Auditions for the summer production will take place Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14, in Murphy Hall at KU.
John Gronbeck-Tedesco, KU professor of theatre and film and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts, wrote "Lift Off" and "Denouement." The plays deal with the "amnesia" that comes from forgotten history and the price people pay for this amnesia, Gronbeck-Tedesco said.
"The large moments in history are not the only ones that contribute to the way things are," he said. "'Prairie Fire' reminds us the larger themes and events of history are possible only because of the small moments made by human beings who seldom are remembered."
"Prairie Fire," directed by Marianne Kubik, assistant professor of theatre and film, will be performed July 12 through 14 and 19 through 21 in the Crafton-Preyer Theatre.
The sign-up for summer auditions is from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 12, in the Murphy Hall lobby. Community members unable to sign up for an appointment in person may call the University Theatre office between noon and 4 p.m. April 12 for an audition appointment.
Open call auditions are by appointment from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in 209 Murphy Hall. People auditioning are strongly encouraged to prepare memorized audition material using contrasting pieces from dramatic literature showing range and versatility. The total audition time should not exceed two minutes for a monologue. The production uses both string and wind instruments; musicians should prepare one minute of song to play. A piano will be provided for auditions.
Callback auditions are from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 14, also in 209 Murphy Hall. Callback lists will be posted on the Green Room Call Board in Murphy Hall by noon April 14. Vocal auditions will take place during callbacks, Kubik said. Cast lists will be posted on the call board by 5 p.m. Monday, April 15. Rehearsals begin Tuesday, June 4, and take place 7 to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
