KU Audio-Reader Network honors 29 volunteers

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Audio-Reader Network held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet on April 23 at the SpringHill Suites Marriott in Lawrence. Twenty-nine volunteers were honored for their years of service with Audio-Reader, a reading and information service for the blind and visually impaired. Audio-Reader Director Janet Campbell and KU Executive Vice Chancellor Janet Murguia presented certificates of appreciation to volunteers who had completed 5, 10, 15 or 20 years of service with Audio-Reader. The honorees included:

Five years
Arleta Bell, Leo Bracciano, Carl Graves, Irene Eisenhart, Jill LaPoint, Patty Mathews, Bob Mathews, Kim Miller, Tim Nauman, Marilyn Parker, John Sprague, Susan Tabor, John Trinkl, Sarah Ubel, Gary Weishaar and Ray Wilbur.

10 years
Marilyn Bradt, Dayla Feldman, Brian Kane, Kim Morrow and Jack Schroeder.

15 years
Betty Anderson, Mike Kopf, Marlee Parmiter, Dainty Wiedeman and Carl Wolf.

20 years
Gary Clark, Warren Lesh and Arline Seely.

Eleanor Symons also was acknowledged for 31 years of volunteering for Audio-Reader.

Volunteers perform live and recorded broadcasts of daily newspapers, books, magazines and other printed materials. Their readings are accessible to blind and visually impaired individuals throughout Kansas and western Missouri via closed-circuit radios, a Telephone Reader system, cassette tapes and the Internet. Volunteer readers must audition before they are eligible to broadcast for Audio-Reader. Volunteers also assist with the Sensory Garden, audio description, fund-raising activities, mailings and outreach.
