KU to recognize top graduate teaching assistants May 9

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas will recognize its top graduate teaching assistants for their dedication and skills during the Graduate School awards ceremony on Thursday, May 9, in the Big 12 room in the Kansas Union.

The award winners also will be recognized during university commencement ceremonies on May 19.

Each of three doctoral candidates -- Bradley Carter in American studies from Lawrence, Christine Robinson in women's studies from Lawrence and Benedict Kemmerer in business from Germany -- will receive the $1,250 Carlin Graduate Teaching Assistant Award.

Diana Carlin, dean of the Graduate School, sponsors the Carlin Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards. The first award was given in 1993.

Five students receive $500 each for winning an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. The KU Graduate School, the Office of the Chancellor and the Graduate and Professional Association sponsor the award, which was started in 1990.

Finalists for the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award each receive $150.

A selection committee chose winners based on their commitment to teaching, departmental and student comments, and level of responsibility. Teaching assistants were nominated from departments and programs throughout the university.

Names of award winners and finalists, all of whom are doctoral candidates, and their fields of study and teaching areas (if different from fields of study), parents' names when available, hometown address and award are listed below.
