KU vice chancellor to be featured speaker at 'Best of Wyandotte' awards banquet

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- University of Kansas Executive Vice Chancellor for University Relations Janet Murguia will address the "Best of Wyandotte" awards program and banquet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at the Woodlands Horse Track banquet facility, 9700 Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kan.

Murguia, a former senior aide to President Bill Clinton, grew up in the Mexican-American neighborhood of Argentine in Wyandotte County and joined KU in 2001.

Three award-winning civic programs will be announced during the gala banquet, to be presented by the Wyandotte County Economic Development Council and the Briedenthal Foundation. Honorees will receive a $1,000 grant, a commemorative plaque and the title "2002 Best of Wyandotte Award Winner." About 500 people are expected to attend the banquet.

Past award winners include Catholic Housing of Wyandotte County, the Wyandotte County Heritage Mural Project, El Centro Inc., Grant Elementary CHAMPS and the Duchesne Clinic.

The "Best of Wyandotte" program is modeled after the National Civic League's All-America City program, which in 1992 named Wyandotte County among the 10 best communities in the United States. Both programs are intended to encourage the development of community partnerships. The "Best of Wyandotte" recognizes and rewards local organizations dedicated to the pursuit of civic excellence through cooperative action.

Before coming to KU, Murguia served as deputy campaign manager and director of constituency outreach for the Gore/Lieberman presidential campaign. Prior to the campaign, she worked at the White House in various capacities beginning in 1994. She was deputy assistant to the president and deputy director of legislative affairs, serving as the senior White House liaison to Congress.

Murguia holds three degrees from KU: a juris doctorate from the law school, a bachelor of science degree in journalism from the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications, and a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
