Today, the University of Kansas community learned of the tragic death of Shauna Szymkowski, a senior in education who was majoring in teaching English as a second language at the elementary level. Faculty who recently had worked with her said she also was planning to attend law school. She died from injuries suffered in a one-car accident on K-10 highway east of DeSoto shortly after 9 p.m. Monday.
Chancellor Robert Hemenway:
"We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Shauna Szymkowski. Those in the university community join me in extending our sincere condolences to her parents and family."
Education Dean Angela Lumpkin:
"The faculty and staff of the School of Education express our deepest sympathy to Shauna's family. Shauna was an outstanding student and a person who will be missed by all of us as well as by her classmates."
