MEDIA ADVISORY: Join 'Surprise Patrol' as it gives $5,000 awards to unsuspecting winning teachers

Join KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway as he leads a "Surprise Patrol" to recognize some of KU's finest teachers on Thursday, the first day of classes at KU.

The Surprise Patrol will hand out $5,000 Kemper Awards for excellence in teaching and advising to six of the 20 recipients on Thursday.

What: Surprise classroom announcements of Kemper Awards. Winning teachers will receive an oversize check for $5,000 and a trophy.

When: Starting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, the first day of classes on the Hill. Media should meet at the chancellor's office (second floor of Strong Hall). The first classroom surprise announcement will occur around 9:40 a.m.

Parking: Several spaces will be reserved for the media on Jayhawk Boulevard in front of Strong Hall. Follow the chancellor and the Surprise Patrol as they burst into classrooms, announce the awards to unsuspecting teachers and hand out the oversize checks and trophies. Vans will be available to transport media to classrooms around campus.

The Patrol: The Surprise Patrol will include Commerce Bank representative Mark Gonzales, community bank president in Lawrence, and Dale Seuferling, president of the Kansas University Endowment Association.

Winners: Biographical information about each winner will be released after the Surprise Patrol announcement.

Running late? Call (785) 766-3105 for an update and location of the Surprise Patrol. On Thursday, awards will be given out from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2:45 p.m.
