KU's Edwards Campus records highest spring enrollment to date

OVERLAND PARK -- The University of Kansas Edwards Campus will post its highest enrollment for a spring semester, according to Bob Clark, vice chancellor for the KU Edwards Campus.

Total credit-hour production for the spring 2002 semester reached 14,116 credit hours, a 2 percent increase from last spring. "This is the first time we have produced more than 14,000 credit hours," Clark said.

"Over the past four years we have worked hard to raise the level of awareness of KU's presence in Overland Park and of the nationally recognized programs offered by KU to the residents of our region," said Clark. "This record-breaking semester is evidence we are achieving that goal and serving the workforce needs of our community."

Three programs at the Edwards Campus showed significant growth this semester. The Doctor of Pharmacy online degree program and marketing communications each increased by 8 percent; programs in the School of Education showed an 11 percent increase.

Undergraduate courses from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on the Edwards Campus showed an increase of 138 percent from last spring. The two new undergraduate degree-completion programs -- in molecular biosciences and literature, language and writing, which began in fall 2001 -- have contributed greatly to this increase.

Tailoring courses for adult learners, the Edwards Campus offers 18 graduate and two undergraduate degree programs. Enrollment has grown from several hundred students in the late 1970s in the original facility, at 99th Street and Mission Road, to 2,400 students a semester on the Edwards Campus, which opened at 126th and Quivira in 1993.
