WHAT: On Thursday, Feb. 7, a 2:30 p.m. press conference and photo opportunity with actor and producer Danny Glover before his 7 p.m. performance,"An Evening with Langston."
Glover will meet with students at Central Junior High School at 2:30 p.m. during an all-school assembly. He will answer questions submitted by students. School will be dismissed at 3:10 p.m., and Glover will remain to take questions from reporters from 3:15 to 3:30 p.m.
WHO: Danny Glover, actor, producer and director, has worked on stage, screen and television. He collaborated with Oprah Winfrey in the filming of Alice Walker's "The Color Purple" and Toni Morrison's "Beloved." He often performs with actor Felix Justice in "An Evening with Langston and Martin," a program of readings from the works of Langston Hughes and Martin Luther King Jr. Glover has worked for causes that help at-risk young people handle drug addiction, literacy issues and the eradication of poverty.
Glover's appearance is part of the "Langston Hughes: Let America Be America Again" international symposium on the art, life and legacy of Hughes, who was born Feb. 1, 1902, in Joplin, Mo., and spent his early childhood years in Lawrence. Hughes attended Lawrence schools, including Central Junior High School (then located at 905 Kentucky St.).
KU's Student Senate is sponsoring Glover's appearance.
At Central Junior High School: 1400 Massachusetts St. Parking is limited. Please allow ample time to find a parking place along neighboring streets and plan to use the building's front entrance (on Massachusetts).
University Relations staff will be available in the front entrance lobby and will have press passes. Vouchers for those covering his 7 p.m. performance will also be available. Please call in advance to reserve a voucher. Please plan to wait in the lobby until the students have assembled in the auditorium. Some seats will be reserved for media. Other media may need to stand or find an empty seat. At 3:15, media may move onto the stage for a brief press conference.
At Lied Center: on KU's west campus at Irving Hill Road and Constant Avenue (entrance drives from 15th at Crestline and from Iowa Street at 19th Street to Constant Avenue). No parking is reserved. Please allow time to find a parking place. (This is a free public event. A large attendence is expected.)
At 6 p.m., the auditorium doors open.
PRESS PASSES and vouchers REQUIRED: If you did not receive them earlier, please come to the MEDIA table near the box office in the Lied Center lobby to pick up a voucher and press pass. Please be prepared to present press credentials.
At 7 p.m., Bill Tuttle, KU professor of American studies, will introduce Kansas City Mid-Region District Manager Ormer Rogers Jr. and Lawrence Postmaster Bill Reynolds. They will present to Glover a framed replica of a commemorative stamp honoring Langston Hughes. The first issuance of the stamp was Feb. 2 in New York City, where Hughes lived before his death in 1967.
Glover will leave the stage. Justin Mills, KU student body president, will give a welcome and introduce symposium director Maryemma Graham, KU professor of English. Graham will introduce Glover and his tribute to Hughes, reading selections of his writings.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: Photographs will be permitted during the stamp presentation and during the question-and-answer session following Glover's program.
RECORDING EQUIPMENT: After the stamp unveiling -- with the exception of C-SPAN, which has permission to tape portions of Glover's performance -- no tape recorders or video cameras are permitted.
NEWS MEDIA SEATING: Seats will be reserved for media. Please check at the MEDIA table near the Lied Center box office for location of seats reserved for media.
SATELLITE FEED: There will be NO satellite feed of video or sound bites from the lecture.
Press passes provide admission to other Langston Hughes symposium events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 8-10. Media covering the symposium should stop at the registration desk near the Kansas Union ballroom on level 5. University Relations staff will be available to help media locate speakers and symposium staff.
