Structural engineering conference to meet at KU in March

LAWRENCE -- Structural considerations of the World Trade Center collapse will be among topics that engineers will consider during the 47th annual Structural Engineering Conference, set for Thursday, March 14, at the University of Kansas.

The conference's purpose is to give structural engineering professionals the latest information on relevant topics and projects. The KU Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering and KU Continuing Education sponsor the conference.

Online registration is available at Continuing Education's Web site.

Other timely topics are design of high-rise buildings, design and testing of exterior walls for blast resistance, and airport security. The engineers also will hear presentations on the selection of structural systems for sports facilities and case examples regarding construction of a long-span, steel-tied arch bridge and of another bridge's failure.

A free workshop, "Where Is Earthquake Engineering Headed over the Next 15 Years?" will take place at KU the day before the conference. The March 13 workshop will discuss the George E. Brown Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES), an $80 million National Science Foundation project. To register for the workshop, call (785) 864-7859 or e-mail bjarvis@ku.edu.
