KU announces names of freshman national scholars

LAWRENCE -- KU's Office of Admissions and Scholarships has announced the names of 123 University of Kansas students in three national scholarship programs -- National Merit, National Hispanic and National Achievement. There are 105 National Merit Scholars, 14 National Hispanic Scholars and four National Achievement Scholars, a program for African Americans.

KU ranks 10th in the country among public universities in the enrollment of new National Merit scholars, according to the National Merit Foundation's annual report. This is the third year in a row that KU has ranked among the top 10 public universities in enrolling new National Merit Scholars.

The National Merit scholarship is widely regarded as the most prestigious national award bestowed upon high school seniors. Fewer than 10,000 students of the 1.2 million who compete for the award, or fewer than 1 percent, receive National Merit scholarships. Recipients are chosen based on their academic abilities and records and extracurricular activities.

The National Hispanic Scholars and National Achievement Scholars programs are the nation's most prestigious competitive scholarships for minority students. These student scholars receive a scholarship package from the Office of Admissions and Scholarships that covers tuition and fees for up to 15 credit hours per semester for eight semesters plus a housing stipend covering the cost of a KU scholarship hall.
