LAWRENCE -- U. S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta has appointed University of Kansas graduate Woodie Woodward as the associate administrator for airports for the Federal Aviation Administration.
Woodward will administer the annual federal airport grant program, which is $3.3 billion for fiscal 2002, and she will assume responsibility for national airport planning, including safety standards, design and engineering. She will report directly to the FAA administrator.
Woodward earned a master's degree in 1972 and doctoral degrees in administration and personnel management in 1976 in KU's School of Education.
"Woodie brings a wealth of experience to the office of airports from previous positions held in the FAA and the legislative branch," Mineta said. "She is a seasoned executive who can work with members of Congress, the airport industry and advocacy group representatives to ensure the continued development of a safe and efficient national airport system."
Since January 2000, Woodward has served as acting associate administrator for airports. Before that appointment, she was director of the FAA's center for management development in Palm Coast, Fla. During her 13-year tenure at the FAA, Woodward has served in numerous positions: acting chief of staff for the office of the administrator, acting associate administrator for administration, and deputy regional administrator for the agency's southern region. Woodward was chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Mack Mattingly, R-Ga., before working at the FAA.
