LAWRENCE -- A new exhibit, "From Reservation to Corporate Office: A Donation of Southwest Art," opens at the University of Kansas Museum of Anthropology on Jan. 26. The art will be on display through Aug. 18.
J.H. Abrahams, Security Benefit Group of Companies chairman and CEO from 1975 to 1995, had a strong interest in Southwest art. With the assistance of Neta Pollom, from the corporate communications department, and in consultation with Squash Blossom Gallery of Kansas City, the Security Benefit Group of Companies from Topeka collected Southwest art from 1977 to 1992. These objects were on display at the corporate office until 1992, when the corporation commemorated its 100th anniversary and redecorated the Heritage Room, which contained the Southwest art.
In 1998, the Security Benefit Group of Companies donated the collection of 28 art objects to the KU Museum of Anthropology. This exhibit includes fine examples of ceramics, textiles, jewelry, katsinas, paintings and sand paintings. In addition, the life histories of the objects will be noted from creation on a reservation to decoration in a corporate office to public treasure in a museum collection.
Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call the museum at (785) 864-4245 or click here.
