Student-designed KU Fine Arts newsletter wins regional merit award

LAWRENCE -- The inaugural edition of the University of Kansas School of Fine Arts newsmagazine, Collage, won a regional merit award in the first design contest of the Wichita chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts in December.

Jacqueline "Jaccie" Irwin designed the summer 2001 edition of Collage in spring 2001 while she was participating in The Arts Group, a studio of KU design department students. Carey Treanor, lecturer in the design department, directs the studio. Irwin graduated in December 2001.

"Jaccie is a wonderful designer and a fine example of the quality of students in the KU Department of Design," said Vickie Hamilton-Smith, Collage editor and director of communications for KU fine arts.

Staff contributors to the school's first newsmagazine were KU fine arts photographer Gordon Holland and contributing writers Kerri Conan, public information officer; and Karen Christilles and Brad Knauss, Lied Center of Kansas. Amy Mendenhall, who received her master's of fine arts degree in 2001, also contributed.

The newsmagazine is available online. The fall 2001 Collage will be posted soon. The KU Fine Arts Communications Office publishes Collage biannually.
