LAWRENCE -- Two University of Kansas student musicians are advancing to the national finals in the annual Music Teachers' National Association Collegiate Artist Performance Competition. Amir Khosrowpour, a junior-year pianist from Irvine, Calif., and Christopher Nierman, a senior trumpeter from Lincoln, Neb., will compete in Cincinnati on March 18.
The prestigious MTNA event includes divisions for brass, piano, strings, voice and winds. Both students first competed at the state level in November. Having won their divisions, Khosrowpour and Nierman advanced to the regional competition, where they bested musicians from Colorado, North and South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota and Nebraska. In Cincinnati, they will compete against the winners from the other regions for the national titles.
Khosrowpour, who double-majors in piano performance and composition, studies at KU with Jack Winerock, professor of piano. Khosrowpour plays jazz piano as well and is performing a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Swarthout Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Christopher Nierman studies at KU with Christopher Moore, assistant professor of trumpet. Nierman is finishing his bachelor of music education degree, and he received an honorable mention at the 1999 Kansas Music Teachers' Association competition. He also has performed as a soloist with the KU Symphonic Band.
The Music Teachers' National Association is a trade organization for private and public music instructors, teachers and professors.
