LAWRENCE -- The 2002 annual meeting and conference of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators is set for Aug. 4 through 9 at the University of Kansas.
This unique conference will feature workshops covering traditional and digital illustration methods and field trips to local prairie sites, the Konza prairie, Hallmark and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Ed Bell, artistic director for Scientific American magazine, will be the keynote speaker. The conference will be co-hosted by the Museum of Natural History at KU and Allen Press, with conference management by KU Continuing Education.
The guild's annual juried members exhibit of natural science illustrations will take place at the KU Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center throughout August and September. The guild's traveling exhibit, demonstrating a range of scientific illustrators' work, also will be at the Natural History Museum.
"Fish, Flowers, and Flying Things: Nature at the Spencer" is an exhibit held at the Spencer Museum of Art as part of the GNSI 2002 conference, featuring works from the museum's own collections.
The Spencer Research Library, a sponsor of the conference, will offer presentations on historic botanical illustration and medical illustration. The library also will offer a lecture on the Ellis Collection, the premier, unrivaled collection of John Gould's bird and animal illustrations.
At the Lawrence Public Library, "Of Moths and Other Insects," featuring the works of GNSI members John Cody of Hays and Gilles Bosquet of Paris, France, will be on display through Aug. 9.
Workshops will cover traditional illustration techniques such as watercolor, painting with carbon dust, and the use of sketchbooks and cameras, and digital techniques to create 2D and 3D animation and the creation of Web pages.
The guild encourages area residents to participate in the conference, and early-registration discounts will apply to Kansas participants. Interested people may register for the entire conference or for select presentations or field trips by mailing or faxing a form located on the Web at gnsi.science-art.com. The Web site includes a full conference agenda and a listing of fees.
