LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas today announced changes in its museum studies graduate program and the addition of a graduate certificate program in collections conservation.
The name of the program has been changed from Historical Administration and Museum Studies (MHAMS) to Museum Studies. Although the program structure has not changed significantly, the new name is more descriptive of the program's mission.
As a result, the graduate degree awarded is a master of arts degree in museum studies. All core museum studies courses now are listed with the acronym MUSE as well as being cross-listed in American studies, anthropology, biology, geology and history.
The program also has added a graduate certificate program in collections conservation. This one-year, 12-credit-hour program is available to KU museum studies program graduates.
The museum studies program was established in 1981 and has produced 108 graduates. Program alumni work in museums, archives and historical sites throughout the United States, including the Smithsonian Institution, the National Park Service and the Kansas State Historical Society.
The 42-credit-hour program offers 18 credits in museum studies basics, 6 credits of professional internship and 18 credits in an academic specialization (American studies, anthropology, biology, geology or history).
