LAWRENCE -- After a 25-year tenure as head of the University of Kansas parking department, Parking Services Director Donald L. Kearns will retire this month, the university announced today.
Donna Hultine, assistant director of parking services, has been appointed interim director until a permanent replacement is named. Kearns will retire effective July 19.
"We appreciate Don's long service to the university," said James A. Long, assistant provost for planning and facilities management. "He has facilitated the establishment of a modern parking system for KU. We wish him the very best in the years ahead."
Kearns was named director of parking in 1977, capping a 15-year career with the Kansas Highway Patrol. Prior to his appointment, he was senior trooper for the Lawrence district. At that time, the parking department was a division of the KU Police Department, now the Office of Public Safety.
Shortly after his appointment, Kearns oversaw the department's reorganization as Parking Services, a self-supporting, autonomous unit. During Kearns' tenure, Parking Services built the popular Allen Fieldhouse and Mississippi Street parking garages on campus and modernized the parking system. The KU campus contains more than 12,000 parking spaces.
Kearns also has been a leader in the parking industry, serving in the 1990s as secretary-treasurer, vice chair and chair of the International Parking Institute, a trade organization with more than 1,400 members in 20 countries. As chair, he focused on high technology and cost-saving innovations in the parking industry.
