2 more faculty win Fulbright grants, breaking KU's record for academic year

LAWRENCE -- Two more University of Kansas faculty members have received Fulbright awards for the 2002-03 academic year. The two new awards bring the total number of KU faculty winning Fulbrights in one academic year to 11, breaking the previous record.

Deborah Gerner and Philip Schrodt, both professors of political science, received Fulbright grants to teach at Birzeit University in the West Bank. Due to the political turmoil and conflict in this region, the U.S. State Department has postponed the use of these two Fulbright awards until the 2003-04 academic year.

This is the first time 11 KU faculty members have received Fulbright grants in the same academic year, surpassing the record of 10 awards made to KU faculty in 1956-57 and in 1962-63.

Gerner will teach courses in international mediation and conflict resolution and on women and politics from a comparative worldwide perspective. Schrodt will teach courses on international conflicts and political science research methods.

Both Gerner and Schrodt taught at Birzeit University during spring 1996 as Fulbright scholars.

One of the oldest and largest international exchange programs in the world, the Fulbright Scholar Program offers grants for college and university faculty and administrators to lecture and conduct research in 140 countries. More than 245 KU faculty have received Fulbright grants since the program began more than 50 years ago.

The Council for International Exchange of Scholars, on behalf of the U.S. Department of State, administers the Fulbright Scholar Program. The Office of International Programs coordinates the program at KU.
