LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas professor Sivaprasad Gogineni has won the 2002 Louise Byrd Graduate Educator Award.
Gogineni, Deane E. Ackers distinguished professor of electrical engineering and computer science, was honored during KU's doctoral hooding ceremony on May 18 at the Lied Center of Kansas.
The Byrd Award honors faculty members who have demonstrated an exceptional level of commitment to graduate students and graduate education, as well as distinguishing themselves as scholars.
Gogineni joined the KU faculty in 1986 and has become a leader in research, teaching and service in the electrical engineering and computer science department. Gogineni's work in radar systems and microwave remote sensing has helped KU rise to the top among international universities in these disciplines.
During his tenure at KU, Gogineni has been recognized for his research programs and his service to NASA.
To support his studies of polar and sea ice monitoring, Gogineni has secured more than $12 million in external funding.
Gogineni also is known for his outstanding support of innovative course development and his vigorous support for his graduate students, including finding financial and technical support to help the students complete their studies.
Gogineni received his bachelor's degree in 1973 from Mysore University in Mysore, India. His master's degree was obtained through Kerala University in Trivandrum, India, and he completed his doctoral degree in 1984 at KU.
He has served as the manager of the Polar Program at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., and as director of the Radar Systems and Remote Sensing Laboratory at the KU Center for Research in Lawrence.
Gogineni was named the Deane E. Ackers distinguished professor of electrical engineering and computer science in January 1999.
The Louise Byrd Graduate Educator Award was established in 1984 in memory of Louise E. Byrd, former longtime secretary of the KU Graduate School. Byrd was noted for her deep commitment to graduate students.
