Brown recluse spider expert receives distinguished service award for students

LAWRENCE -- A University of Kansas graduate student in ecology and evolutionary biology has won the Graduate Student Award for Distinguished Service.

Jamél S. Sandidge, Lawrence, recently received the award from Diana B. Carlin, dean of the KU Graduate School. Sandidge received $400, and his name was included on a plaque at the Kansas Union.

Sandidge is part of a team creating the Community Recluse Project, a Web site devoted to informing the public about brown recluse spiders.

The distinguished student award was established in 1983 to honor a graduate student who has a genuine commitment to serving the university while maintaining a high level of academic achievement.
