LAWRENCE -- After a three-year hiatus, the International Institute for Young Musicians brings its prestigious Summer Music Academy back to the University of Kansas campus. The event runs from July 1 through 19 and features performances at the Lied Center at 7 p.m. July 5, 10 and 17. All concerts are free and open to the public.
Under the direction of KU graduate Scott McBride Smith, the program attracts talented piano and string students from around the globe. During the three-week intensive course of rehearsal and performance, students ranging from grade school through college benefit from one-on-one instruction with some of the most accomplished music educators in the country, including several of KU's own faculty members.
Former IIYM students have received prizes in the most important international competitions, such as the Van Cliburn, the Chopin, the Gina Bachauer and the Music Teachers National Association. The program combines private lessons with supporting classes in sight-reading, music theory, accompanying, opera and careers in music. Students perform in recitals, master classes and onstage in front of audiences.
In addition to the honors recitals at the Lied Center, there will be daily concerts at 6:30 p.m. July 8 through 16 in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall on the KU campus. Admission is free and open to the public.
