The following is a statement by Richard Norton Smith, director of the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas:
"In recent weeks, questions have been raised concerning the research methods and scholarly creditation employed in Doris Kearns Goodwin's 'The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys.' Having no wish to expose Ms. Goodwin to further controversy, the Dole Institute has opted to seek an alternative speaker to inaugurate this fall's Presidential Lecture Series.
"In doing so, we are mindful of Ms. Goodwin's own desire to cut back on a heavy speaking schedule in order to devote more time to her unfinished work on Lincoln's wartime presidency.
"We hope to announce a replacement speaker shortly. None of this, of course, will have any effect on the previously scheduled appearances by Michael Beschloss on Nov. 10 and David McCullough on Nov. 17."
