LAWRENCE -- More than 140 awards were given to high school students of German from six high schools at the annual Schuelerkongress at the University of Kansas March 2.
Because of inclement weather, students from only six of the 19 registered schools were able to attend. Buhler, Lawrence, Seaman, Shawnee Mission South, Sumner and Topeka West high schools participated in the competition.
Students competed for medals in contests including poetry recitations, prose reading, spelling, cultural tests and oral proficiency. In the Schuelerkongress, which translates as ėstudent congress,Ų poetry and prose recitations tend to attract students because more can win medals in those competitions, according to William Keel, KU professor of German. The poems and prose selections are made in advance by a committee of high school teachers to match studentsŲ level of study. Cultural tests focussed on the euro, geography, cuisine and history.
The first Schuelerkongress took place at KU in 1965. KU was host of the event from 1992 to 1999, and Kansas State University was the host for 2000 and 2001. The Kansas Association of Teachers of German will determine the next host university at its September 2002 meeting.
