LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas has launched a new Web site that offers users a virtual tour of Jayhawk Boulevard.
The site, located at www.virtualtour.ku.edu, uses a map of the boulevard that allows viewers to click on campus buildings and see panoramic views of those buildings. Viewers also may click on photos of the buildings' interiors to see enlarged pictures of classes being taught or students being advised. Another feature is a gallery page where browsers may look at all the panoramic images at once.
The panoramas are created with software that seamlessly stitches individual, overlapping digital photos together. Each photograph in the panoramic shots was taken using a special tripod head that allows the photographer to rotate the camera in precise increments. A series of at least 18 frames was used to create each panorama.
The site, created by the Office of University Relations, contains text about each of the buildings on Jayhawk Boulevard, drawn from historic documents at the Spencer Research Library and from books about the university.
A four-color brochure, "A Walking Tour of Historic Jayhawk Boulevard," also produced by the Office of University Relations, contains information similar to that on the new Web site.
