Author James Ellroy to speak at legal, media professionals' annual conference

LAWRENCE -- James Ellroy, author of "L.A. Confidential," "Black Dahlia," "The Big Nowhere" and "The Cold Six Thousand," will be the luncheon speaker at the 15th annual Media and the Law Seminar Friday, April 19, at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo. Ellroy is also a former defendant in a defamation suit.

The seminar, presented by University of Kansas Continuing Education, will feature panels on media crisis management and balancing national security issues against the public's right to know and individuals' privacy rights. One hour will be devoted to ethics.

Other speakers will include Chip Babcock, former attorney for Oprah Winfrey, and Lee Levine, co-author of the treatise "Newsgathering and the Law."

The largest one-day seminar of its kind, the event brings to Kansas City 300 lawyers, journalists and businesspeople from across the country. The seminar focuses on issues of mutual concern to lawyers and journalists, including media coverage of the legal process, laws affecting journalists, conflicts between free speech and privacy rights, and relations between government, business and the media.

The seminar is planned by the Media and the Law Committee of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association.

For information or to register, call toll-free (877) 404-KUCE (5823) or visit www.kuce.org/app/law. Separate tickets for the luncheon, featuring James Ellroy, will be available after March 29 if space permits.
