KU to honor high school seniors at Colby

Editor's note: Jack Fincham, dean of the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy, will replace Chancellor Robert Hemenway as speaker at the April 4 Kansas Honors Program at Colby.

LAWRENCE -- Students from 18 Kansas high schools will be honored Thursday, April 4, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and the KU Endowment Association.

The students, seniors from Cheyenne, Decatur, Gove, Logan, Rawlins, Sheridan, Thomas and Wallace counties, will be named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 6:30 p.m. dinner program at the Colby Community College Student Union, 1255 S. Range Ave., Colby.

Honorees are listed below.

Robert Hemenway, chancellor of the University of Kansas, will speak. Alumni Association representative Jennifer Jackson Sanner, senior vice president for communications and editor of Kansas Alumni magazine, is in charge of award presentations.

The program will cost parents and alumni $10.50 each. Honored students will be guests of the Alumni Association and the Endowment Association.

Sharon Steele, Colby, is the site, Thomas County and Wallace County coordinator. Other county coordinators are Wade Park, Oakley, for Gove, Logan and Sheridan counties; Mike and Brenda Day, St. Francis, for Cheyenne County; Kurt Vollertsen, Oberlin, for Decatur County; Betsy Holste, Ludell, for Rawlins County; and Perry and Janet Warren, Goodland, for Sherman County.

The KU Endowment Association and the KU Alumni Association began sponsoring the Kansas Honors Program in 1971. The program has honored 79,500 students in the top 10 percent of the Kansas high school senior classes.
