The following statement by Lynn Bretz, director of University Relations, is in reference to the new "metro" tuition rate of $153.40 per credit hour for Kansans in Wyandotte, Johnson, Leavenworth and Miami counties to attend the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
"Tuition at the University of Kansas -- even with an increase this fall -- will remain much lower than the new Missouri rate for students in four Kansas counties.
"KU currently charges $77.75 per credit hour, nearly 50 percent less than the new UMKC tuition rate.
"The recent proposal endorsed by the student-led Ad Hoc Committee on University Funding would take four years to raise KU tuition to the level UMKC will charge this fall. In April the university will submit to the Kansas Board of Regents its official recommended plan for tuition increases. The board will act on the recommendation later this year.
"KU has long held a reputation for academic excellence for its price. U.S. News and World Report ranks KU as 39th among public national universities. The Fiske Guide to Colleges and Barron's both cite KU as one of the best buys in the nation for educational quality and price.
"KU will remain one of the best buys in the region and the nation."
