LAWRENCE -- C-SPAN will air segments of a February symposium at the University of Kansas celebrating the life and legacy of Langston Hughes as part of the channel's launch of American Writers II: The 20th Century. The series will air at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 31, and again at 7 p.m. Friday, April 5.
The American Writers: A Journey Through History series, which began in spring 2001, was postponed following Sept. 11. The March 31 launch begins part two with a live television program from Harlem focusing on Harlem Renaissance writers Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes.
C-SPAN taped portions of KU's February 2002 international symposium, "Let America Be America Again," celebrating the life and work of Langston Hughes, for use on the series.
Segments of acclaimed actor Danny Glover's Feb. 7 "An Evening with Langston" program at the Lied Center will be broadcast March 31.
Programs will air live from 2 to 4 p.m. each Sunday and again at 7 p.m. Fridays.
During the week of April 1 to 5, C-SPAN plans to air Glover's full speech at KU's Lied Center. The air-time for Glover's speech will depend on breaking news events during the week. C-SPAN representatives explained that some programs are scheduled only a few hours before they will air.
More information about the series and writers is available at www.americanwriters.org/.
