8 KU professors to receive distinguished teaching awards during commencement

LAWRENCE -- Eight University of Kansas faculty members will be honored as recipients of distinguished teaching awards for the 2001-2002 academic year during commencement ceremonies at 2:30 p.m. May 19 in Memorial Stadium.

The Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Classroom Teaching is given to faculty members of the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., and Wichita. This year's winners, all from the Kansas City, Kan., campus, are Katherine A. Fletcher, clinical assistant professor of nursing; Norberto C. Gonzalez, professor of molecular and integrative physiology; and Kimberly J. Templeton, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery.

Two faculty members, Sandra Gray, associate professor of anthropology, and Suzanne Rice, associate professor of teaching and leadership, will receive H. Bernerd Fink awards for outstanding classroom teaching. The award was established by Ruth and H. Bernerd Fink of Topeka in 1961.

Andrew Borovik, associate professor of chemistry, will receive the Archie and Nancy Dykes Award. The award honors faculty members for undergraduate teaching and mentoring. Former KU Chancellor Archie Dykes and his wife, Nancy, established the award in 1990.

David M. Katzman, professor of American studies, will be the recipient of the Ned N. Fleming Trust Award for distinguished teaching, scholarship and service.

Debora Ortega, assistant professor of social welfare, will receive the Silver Anniversary Award. The 25-year alumni class provides this award.
