LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas theatre design program has been invited to prepare an exhibit of student theatre design work for inclusion in the U.S. Schools of Scenography Exhibit at the Prague Quadrennial 2003. The United States Institute for Theatre Technology issued the invitation.
Held every four years in the Czech Republic, the event is the premier international exhibition of world stage design and theatre architecture, according to Delbert Unruh, professor of theatre and film.
"This is a high honor," Unruh explained. "Countries from all over the world send national exhibitions of professional design. In 1995, 45 countries participated and sent exhibitions of the best of student work. In 1995, 11 universities were invited to participate. In 1999, 28 universities were invited. This new invitation is continuing recognition of the excellence of our theatre design program."
Theatre design students from KU have been selected to participate in the past three quadrennials. In 1991, graduate scenography students Michael Reese and Robert Donlon were selected. In 1995, designs by theatre design student Judy Pfeifer were included. In 1999, graduate scenography students Nathan Hughes and Bill Nelson were selected.
Unruh said the theatre design faculty would meet in the fall to select the students whose work would be included in the exhibit.
